How do you store/play your media?

I just got a external hard drive and I'm amalgamating many sources of media. Does anyone rip dvds for storage on a drive, and if so what programme do you use? I've been using dvd shrink, and I'm a bit confused on how to do it efficiently.

I use Mac The Ripper to rip DVD's, and then VisualHub to convert to any format I want.

For Windows, look into DVDDecryptor (the old, free version is better) to rip DVD's, and VirtualDub+FFDSHOW codecs to convert.

I find I get so confused with the whole process of ripping and converting dvds for some reason. Can I rip a dvd and make it into one clean avi or divx file?

You can with VisualHub on Mac OS X.

I am pretty sure you can with VirtualDub, but I think it's a little trickier, VisualHub has a pretty obvious "Join Files" button.

this all confuses me greatly, I need to find a medium complex instruction manual for this. I'm not an idiot with it, but get confused over technical language.

Thanks, I'll check it tomorrow. A friend is coming over and letting me copy his whole collection. Luckily, most of his media is stored as data on RWs.
